Windows will use a different code page for GUI applications (1252) than for the Command Prompt (437). This will lead to a display of different characters in the Command Prompt window.

To correct this, we need to select a font for the Command Window that allows the 1252 code page; we can do this as follows:

Open a command window
Right mouse click in the title window
Pick Lucida Console as the font
(Raster Fonts do not work)
and click OK.

The DOS utility CHCP is used to switch to a different code page:

CHCP 1252

The log of a GAMS run will now show the correct foreign characters, but so will the DOS TYPE command.
